Many people who are working on themselves are trying to escape the toxic patterns of their family and ancestors. If you are one of them and striving for a better life and self – congratulations, you’re on the right path!

Let’s see how breaking a cycle looks like:

  1. Acknowledge what’s wrong. Before we start changing something, we must first acknowledge what is wrong and what needs our attention and seek improvement.
  2. Seek help. If you cannot make a change on your own, you can always seek help. Finding a therapist, a counselor, or even a group of people who want to break the bad patterns is a great idea.
  3. Dealing with negative emotions. When you have started to implement good changes and go in the direction of breaking a toxic cycle, you may experience some hard feelings including resistance, discomfort, and sometimes even loneliness. It is a must to know that these feelings are a normal part of breaking the cycle and of every big change. Remind yourself that you are on the right path.
  4. Transformation. Now, you will experience significant changes, which will lead to self growth and positive transformations of all sorts.
  5. Challenge. You are the one who will have a chance to challenge the dysfunctional family patterns.
  6. Refuse to accept. People will want to make you believe that everything is fine the way it is and try to make you accept that it’s just how things are. Be brave enough to continue your cycle breaker journey.
  7. Self love. So far, you’ve changed a lot, especially your mindset. This is when treating yourself with love and respect will take place.
  8. Setting new norms. Finally, you know what’s good for you and your people and you know how to set new and healthier norms.
  9. Coping mechanisms. You can also start to think about changing how you cope and find some healthier patterns.
  10. Your values. You have enough power and energy to identify your own values and stick to them.

In the end, you will find out that your own boundaries and values have set you free. Yes, it was your responsibility to set and implement them.
